and this isn't a big deal, but I'm just curious.ĭoes anyone know the overall impact of the GP-1 on battery life, say you use it heavily or for almost every shot? I always carry an external battery to recharge my phone whenever I'm out shooting. (can't recall who made it, but I know they stopped selling it). I used an external GPS module on my D3 that plugged into the 10-pin connector. Useless feature for her, and probably 90% of people who bought that camera. My sister had a Panasonic p&s that has it. There was a time when built-in GPS was the in thing. Obviously they're trying to push everyone to use SnapBridge if they want to embed GPS data (or buy a used GPS unit like I did). I just wish that since NIkon doesn't include GPS in most of their cameras, that they would still produce the newer GP-1a module, but it's discontinued. Plus I'm sure some people are/were concerned about being tracked with the GPS module built into the camera even though you could turn it on/off as your leisure. I think Nikon has come to a point where they don't want t ocharge customers for features that the majority of shooters won't use (like GPS, or ProRES video) so they make these optional (as either paid-upgrades or just accessories like the GPS units). My $400 D5300 backup DSLR has built-in GPS and WiFi, but successor models were decontent-ed by removing this extremely useful functionality. It has nothing to do with a dilemma and everything to do with cost-cutting. So camera manufacturers have a difficult decision: do they force the user to hang a wart on the camera (ugh), or force users to buy more batteries and at the same time increase the camera’s price for a minority of users (ugh)?
